Watch for run between low A and C
Quick Practice Checklist
Order of Events:
1) Play note #1
2) Lift the gracenote finger off of the chanter
3) Keeping the gracenote finger off, play note #2
4) Put the gracenote finger back on the chanter
Ensure multiple fingers coming off together are coordinated and lift the highest finger 1st to eliminate runs. (low A to C)
Practice slowly, then gradually increase speed.
Key Ideas to Remember
Order of events is critical for clean articulation.
Speed will develop naturally when slow practice is precise.
Gracenotes provide staccato effect and dynamics in the melody.
Coordination of multiple fingers and pinky prevents runs and
keeps tone clean.Mastery of these exercises forms the foundation for more complex bagpipe tunes.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Incorrect order of Gracenote steps → causes extra notes or messy sound.
Fingers not coming off together → leads to runs or uneven sound.
Pinky not going on last → affects tone and timing.
Rushing exercises → reinforces mistakes; speed must follow accuracy.
Ignoring subtle loudness differences → chanters may respond differently, patience is key.
Lesson 11: Exercise with Gracenotes
Lesson Notes with Timestamps:
0:00 – 1:00 Low G → Low A → B → Low A Exercise
Exercise: Low G → Low A → B → Low A
Use the Gracenote order:
Play note 1
Lift gracenote finger
Play note 2 (gracenote finger off)
Replace gracenote finger
[0:03–0:43] Demonstration of exercise]
Tip: Same steps apply when moving from B → Low A.
1:00 – 1:55 C → B Exercise
Move from C → B using same gracenote order:
Play C
Lift gracenote finger
Keeping the gracenote finger off, play B
Replace gracenote finger
Slight variation in loudness may occur due to chanter differences,
but playing in the correct order will improve speed and precision over time.
[1:09–1:55 Demonstration of C → B]
1:55 – 3:10 Longer Exercise: Low A → C
Move from Low A → C (no gracenote):
Two fingers must come off together.
Pinky goes on last.
Avoid runs:
If two fingers coming off create a run, lift the highest finger first
(C finger), then the other, then replace the pinky.
[2:17–3:01 Demonstration]
Key tip:Playing slowly and correctly builds speed naturally;
playing fast incorrectly makes mistakes harder to fix.
3:10 – 4:04 Adding Gracenote on B
Continue exercise: Low A → C → B with G Grace note
Follow same order of events as previous exercises.
[3:20–4:04 Demonstration]
Mastery at slow speed ensures accuracy at faster speeds.
